10 typing tips to improve your speed and accuracy
Small habits that make a big difference. Try one at a time and watch your WPM climb.
1. Always start from the home row
Return your fingers to A-S-D-F and J-K-L-; after every keystroke. This anchor is what lets you find keys without looking.
2. Keep your eyes on the screen
Resist the urge to look down. Trusting your finger memory is the whole point of touch typing — and it's how you catch mistakes instantly.
3. Prioritise accuracy over speed
Slow, correct typing trains the right patterns. Speed is the reward for accuracy, not a substitute for it.
4. Use the correct finger for every key
It feels slower at first, but proper finger assignments unlock speeds that hunt-and-peck never can. Our keyboard guide shows the map.
5. Learn a steady rhythm
Aim for even, consistent keystrokes rather than bursts. A smooth rhythm is faster and less tiring than sprinting and stalling.
6. Don't hammer the keys
Light, relaxed presses reduce fatigue and improve control. Let your fingers glide.
7. Practise the keys you miss most
Everyone has weak keys. Our stats page highlights yours, and targeted drills help you fix them.
8. Warm up before long sessions
A quick 30-second test or an easy drill loosens your fingers and sharpens focus.
9. Make it fun
Motivation matters. Mix in typing games and daily challenges so practice never feels like a chore.
10. Practise every day
Consistency beats intensity. Ten minutes daily builds muscle memory faster than an hour once a week. Keep your streak alive!
